  • Large tank owners - what reactor???

What do those of you have have large net volumes use for a reactor? My gross water volume is around 650-700 gallons with around 500 being my guess at net. I currently use two reactors (both external) with 2.5 liters of zeolites in each. I actually use about 2 liters of new material with about 1/2 liter of old. I replace the media in one reactor each month, so the media gets replaced every eight weeks.

I was just wondering if anyone had suggestions on a better large reactor that might be able to hold the entire amount.

OUinLA custom reactor.. I would contact Madison... What reactors do you have and use currently that hold 2.5 liters?

Two reactors from Madison that he made before moving to OK. He knows them well for various reasons.

Have you contacted him about building a large reactor? I have not seen any avail online that hold 5 liters..

Mike, here is a thread from Timon about a 5 liter zeo reactor but as Timon states on page 2 he had to get a newer inner chamber to even fit 4 liters so do not buy this for 5 liters.

Thanks - I remember reading that one. Probably won't work for me. The only reason I even ask is that I keep having to fix the one's I have as the inner tube gets separated from bottom dispersion plate and then the thing is ultra hard to pump and the inner tube can actually get stuck in front of the outlet port causing the water to overflow out the top. :cursin:

            Oh, well......

So you have externals? I have an insump and my inner tube handle rod has come apart also and I have reglued it many times for it to work about a week then brakes again. I have a hard time pumping it also as the handle comes up and down without the stones getting much of a shaking.. I have sent Madison an email about building me a bigger better one also external so I do not have this problem any longer.. Plus with mine I only have about 2 inches of pumping I can do and also the liths are within an inch from the top of the inner tube so I get the small rocks all over my sump and that bugs me also...

I have pics of the reactor but the tank is about 6 weeks from set up. I am waiting on a Red Dragon 6.5m3 return pump and finishing the finish carpentry and flooring.

BTW I will be looking for Some Efflo Frags if you have any to spare or if you could frag now and just let it grow out. I have a special place set aside in the plan for an Efflo

I have never had problems with the handle and I actually had Madison make a few changes to the second reactor. I had him shorten the inner tube a couple inches to allow for more pumping room before the outlet port. I also cut off the center PVC pipe (part of the handle and glued a threaded fitting on the end and then glued a male part on the upper part of the handle so that I could unscrew the upper part and leave it in the top bulkhead. My clearance above the reactor isn't all that great so this also allows me to remove the top part of the reactor separately and reach in to remove the bottom easier. Makes it much easier come stone changing time.

I may just have to come up with something to more firmly hold the inner tube and bottom plate together, maybe soem sort of "L" bracket that comes up from under the bottom plate, through a slit in the plate andis then glued both to the bottom plate and the side of the acrylic tube............

Mike, in regards to the outlet tube, I cut mine off nearly flush with the inner diameter of the outer tube. Allowing the inner chamber to pass by gaining another few inches of "pumping" room. Mine runs internal, but can be used externally as well. Has never leaked a drop. JME.

                          How are the frags doing?

                            Marshall,

I lost three of the four "dry" shipped ones and one of the Torts, but the rest are doing well.

As for the reactor, my outlet is almost flush, but that creates problems if raising the inner tube too much, thereby cutting off the outflow. A real problem on an external as the water leavel gets higher and higher with each pumping and will eventually come out the top bulkhead. I actually placed the threded fitting on the handle at a point that will not allow me to pull the inner tube up that far. Even with the inner tube 2" shorter on the newer reactor, I could probably fit 4 bags of Zeolites in there no problem with room to pump.

                            Take care,

                            Mike
