  • New CA Reactor Question

Stupid question, but my CA directions do not mention this. Does the probe for my pH controller go in the aquarium, or is it measureing the CA output. I'm assumming you would want to monitor the tank pH.

Some do both with 2 probes.

I only have one so I keep it in the tank and on occasion check pH coming from the reactor.

Is it a controller or just a monitor?

Well, I have both. I have a brand new Pinpoint monitor, and a brand new controller as well.

Madison...did you see my last PM? Real winner huh? I'm still waiting to here back from you on the other stuff. I didn't know you had moved...my dad is from Chikashea. ANy chance of getting a zeo reactor as well as the other I asked you about?

Almost forgot...so basically I plug my solenoid from the regulator into the pH controller?

          It looks straight forward otherwise.

            Sorry... I don't run a controller so I can't help.

The CA reactor is up and running and these are my current settings.
The pH controller is set at 8.
C02 is running at a rate of 1 bubble per 3 seconds when on.
The stream into the sump is at a very fast drip rate, faster than I can count...I think this is refered to as a broken stream.

I'll let it run for an hour or so and then check the pH coming out. I'll check the dhk & calcium before I go to bed, then every 24hrs. My pH ar start was 8.1 afte the lights had been on 4 hours.

              Any advice?

For me, I use the controller to control the ph in the reactor instead of the tank.

                  Farish-

Why would you worry about the pH in the reactor versus the tank?

That is how i tune my reactor. I set the Ph of the reactor and specific effluent rate when i initially tune the reactor then I will monitor if the CA/KH of the tank holds steady/increases/decreases.

I then adjust the ph of the reactor to give me more or less CA/MG as required and its as easy as dialing in a lower or higher ph setting on the controller instead of counting bubble rate or drip date.

Personally, I monitor the PH of the tank just as a safety measure. If it drops down too low, alarms will sound and emails sent to me via my IKS.

                    Hope that helps

Also don't try and make adjustments on tank KH via reactor. If you see KH falling add KH booster. If KH rises turn off co2. The reactor is meant to sustain a certain level and not for raising or lowering parameters.

                        Chad-

My KH wsn't the problem, it was calcium. I have since brought my calcium up over several days. How successful is everyone keeping kh and calcium up with just a reactor?

Chad, absolutely correct. Adjustments to correct the KH values should be done manually. CR should only be tuned to a point that it can maintain KH without manual intervention.

Marc, thats strange, if you are able to maintain KH correctly without manual intervention of adding buffers etc etc then the CR SHOULD be able to hold the CA levels perfectly fine as the CR media gives the correct ratio of KH/CA that our corals need when dissolved.

I was adding Superbuffer dkh to my makeup water, but wasn't dosing calcium. Over time the calcium was depleted. I had a test kit that kept telling me that the calcium level was 400...well it turned out to be 240. Since I thought it was 400 I wasn't dosing.
