          Thanks guys,,,

Mshur, how come you cannot feed it like a regular reactor, does it require a doser to work correctly?

Do you drive it with a peristaltic pump? If so, why? I have one as well, but have not set it up yet.

                    Thanks,

                        Orion,

                        Thanks,

Main question, do you have to run it with a dosing pump? I cannot figure out why feeding it would be bad verses drawing the water through with a doser.....

                          Hi John,
I have been using a JS-1 for 5-6mo. I don't think it is absolute that you have to feed w/ a peristaltic pump. If your demands are high enough you could get by w/ feeding it w/ something like a Eheim compact 300 or something similar. With smaller systems as mine w/ light calcium demands the peri pump allows you to set your bubble count @ about 10bpm and a very slow drip rate while still being able to keep the reactor ph steady @ around 6.5 that is recommended for the media. With my system (lightly stocked 58gal.) my demands were so low that I was only running my co2 for about 2hrs. per day. Doing this the reactor ph was yo yoing up and down (ph).
With these reactors they are not ment to have any pressure created by the feed pump. With any other reactor I have had you feed the reactor w/ your pump and control flow on your effluent (output side). With the Schuran your effluent drip is controlled on the the input side of the reactor eliminating any pressure build up. I think what happens when people set the effluent on the low end of the recommended flow range you can cause a siphon effect on the recirc. head. This in turn lets co2 escape through the effluent line and does not allow reactor ph to fall to where it needs to be. You get a big air bubble at the top of the reactor that comes down to where the effluent is drawn from (about 2-3") from top of unit.
If your systems demands allow you to run the reactor at a higher effluent flow you may not have any problems. If you have a spare power head laying around I would try that first before you spend the money on a peri. pump.
I don't know if I can add a link but you can find a great thread on this reactor w/ lots of great pics on RC. Thread starter is EWAN and I think you could find it by searching Schuran jetstream 1.
Hope some of that makes sense .
                          Take Care,
                          Chad

I use it with a dosing pump on the water input and let it siphon out on the output. It is not 100% necessary to use a pump because you can also Tee off from your system pump but I find using a dosing pump gives me much more accurate control than trying to regulate it with the valve.

And BTW I use a diaphragm metering pump set to 5 liters per hour, most peristaltic pumps available don't provide enough waterflow.
