  • Is this enough flow?

Hello fellow zeoheads! I'm setting up my new 150 (55 x 26 x 24) open top sps dominated tank. And I want your opinions on the flow.

I don't want any powerheads in the tank, so I'm going to have 4 returns coming out of the over flow box. 2 are from the return powered by Red Dragon 4.5 (1,189 gph). The other 2 outlets are coming from closed loop by Red Dragon 10 (2,642 gph).

Do you think that's enough flow? or should I make more outlets and get a bigger pump for my closed loop? or just get a bigger dragon?

    Thanks,

    Naka

Sounds to me like you would have the flow covered with that combination. Use an OM 4 way on the CL and have adjustable/pointable outlets and your good to go.

I would say flow placement is more important than your volume.

Tons of flow coming from the back or bottom of a tank, is going to be of little value depending on your aquascaping.

Discuss where you want to place your Closed loop returns.

Also varying the flow whether using a motorized valve or a variable speed pump is important.

Even with an OM - Placement of OM outlets is critical.

I am a fan of the OM products. And have been using motorized ball valves on my reef tanks since "Flash Back" music was "New Releases" on Vinyl.

But the outlets needs to be placed to get water to the front/top of the corals, as well as to blow the sediments from the bottom of the aquascaping.

              What about something like this?
Forget about what the 2 curved inlets on the top. Look at the two on the bottom. It will be OM no. 1 & 3 (shooting out at the same time) Then the two outlets on the front bottom two will be OM no. 2 & 4 bringing the water up when 1 &3 shuts off. Therefore creating a nice circular motion back into the overflow box.

Then out of the overflow box at the top will be 2 outlets from the return shooting 45 deg. towards front.

Hey bro, thanks for stopping by today. Your tank is going to be one nice show with all the things you told me about. I will design you an aquascape soon. I especially cant wait to see the Sfigoli light setup. I've been waiting a long time for this.

As for your flow, there was a thread I posted here a while back on the way you have it set up. It was from some other country. Let me see if I can locate it.
