  • Red-Dragon Pump

About a month ago, I bought a Red-Dragon pump for a return pump here in Seoul, S.Korea. I understand it was shipped from Germany.

I ordered a 65W pump but the lable on the pump says,

    230V/50Hz,max. 72 Watt/h
    Leistung : 8 m3

royal-exclusiv web shows they make 65W and 75W but no 72W.
Since S. Korea is on 220V, 60Hz we asked to modify the pump.
    However, some experience Hz problem.

I was wondering what is the 72W Red-Dragon pump??
I have not yet installed just to be sure.
Is this just a print error or a random suprise present??

Are the intake- and outtake fittings made with red PVC ?

Yes, they are made with red PVC pipe and black body.

It looks like one of this but it does not have those bypass air-tube and related assembly.

Just liked to make sure you use a original Red Dragon pump as there are copies available also.

azzza, are you able to take a picture of your pump, and the lable ?

I attached photos of the questioned pump and its lable.
This pump was supposed to be a 65W pump.

BTW, even the lable says its 230V 50Hz, this motor should have been modified to work on 220V 60Hz. Howerver, some who bought these pump with me experience Hz problem.. slow start with vibration when turned on&off&on and sudden pump failure and stop.
Is there any way to id or test a pump whether it is made for 50Hz or 60Hz?

                thanks for the pictures,

i am running 230V/50hz equipment on 230V/60hz, with no side effects, i dont have a RD but i run eheims just fine, i wouldn't expect any problems do to 60 hz actually,

My Ehim pumps like 1250 and 1260 are made to work on 220-240V, 50/60Hz. I believe every Ehim pumps are made to support 50 and 60 Hz.
                  However, RDs don't.

Pump specialist says if you use 50Hz pump on 60Hz, pump will perform 120% than its original performance, but it will slow down in weeks and eventually stop or experience cavitation when turned off and on.

They suggest to change to a smaller impeller to perform 50Hz pump 100% on 60Hz. I understand this is what is being done over in Germany to slove this Hz problem, but it will take months to find proper impeller and make them and to be delivered. However, my new tank will be delivered tomorrow.

BTW, is there anyone who knows about my 65W should be but 72W RD pump that doesn't exist?

Maybe that's what that particular pump showed when tested? Klaus is good but he makes changes like I change my underwear and of course don't tell anybody about it when I do.

The motor is probably the same for 50 or 60 HZ. You are right about the normal procedure to be to trim the impellor when operating at a higher speed.

There is another solution. Restrict the output with a valve partially closed. If you look at a typical pump curve below you will see that as the pump sees more back pressure it pulls less energy.

If your pump is not on a skimmer and running wide open, but it is on a recirculation system, you may have enough friction loss in the lines that will do the same thing.

If you want to double check, hook the pump up to an amp meter while it is running, and make sure it isn't pulling more than 3.2 amps. If it is pulling more than 3.2 amps close a valve slightly to reduce the flow. The amperage will go down and the load on the motor will be reduced.

                        @Dear Azzza,
thats a mistake... Red Dragon 6 m3 used 65 watts, Red Dragon 8 m3 (the pump on your picture) used 75 watt
Red Dragon Pumps is runnung with 220 Volt/ 50 and 60 Hz. Only the impeller is a little smaller. When the pump is not soft-starting, you can switched the impeller with screw to smaller impeller with smaller diameter. All Red Dragon Pumps are using screw-impellers and at this month, all Bubble-King NeedleWheels have a screw.
The United States using another voltage, 120 Volt/60 Hz. Thats a special-motor.

                        best regards... Klaus Jansen

Klaus Jansen : Thank you for your great products. Now, I am an owner of BK 250 and RD 75W. I understand you and DiscusKorea in Seoul is settling the Hz issue with smaller impeller. However, they say it will take weeks or months for me to actually have a smaller impeller. I hope it will not take that long... please.. please...please... Have a nice holiday!
