  • Ordering my new tank

I'm about ready to place the order for my new tank. It will be an acrylic reef ready. The dim are 120 x 34 x 30. It will be BB and mostly sps tank. I plan to use a hammerhead sequence pump for return. And 2 6100 and 2 6200 stream pumps. Also 2 1in sea swirls for water movement. My question is would you also have the tank drilled for closed loops? I want to be able to keep all the debris from behind the rock work. If so, how many holes, what sizes, and locations. This is my dream tank so I want to do it right the first time. Also, what pump would you recommend for the closed loop.

Thanks for all advice. Will be placing the order as soon as I decide if I want it drilled for CL.

definately do closed loops. location and size depends on the aquascape and the pump.

      Hi QUinLA,

Thanks for your reply. I don't plan to pack this tank full of rock and will plan to have the aquascape as open as possible. What size pump would you use for the closed loops. This is will be a 535 gal tank. I may have to use a Hammerhead sequence for the closed loop. That should handle it right?

Congrats, Fonda, I'm sure that will be a very nice reef As I mentioned to you before a water-wand made from PVC with drilled perforated holes will help prevent debris-pockets, but this takes alot of pump[s] pressure but really does the job intended. Bob

          Hi Bob,

I remember you saying something about a water wand? Still not sure what that is? I'm trying to fiquire out how many holes to drill on the back of the tank for closed loops. I think I have everything else planned out. Takes some time to plan out how you want everything and to be happy with the plans.

Fonda, are the SS's returning water to your reef or on CL's? On my 375g, I used 2 pumps for my waterwand, with of course 4 holes on the back pane to handle the CL pumps. Bob

Very nice demensions. you better start a thread with alot of pics, haha.

if you want to try closed loops take alook at my thread about my 275 gallon tank. i am using 3 closed loops. i LOVE not looking at the huge streams, haha. the only downside is the streams do use less electricity.

maybe if you go the stream route, have a faux wall and just have the outlet showing, look up reefboy1 (Art) on here he had envision acrylics make him something like i described, very nice feature. or looks up Mantis over on RC and he had the same thing done. Arts was acrylic and Mantis's was glass so it can be done with both.

either way very nice tank size!

                Bob,

I'm using a little giant 4 on the sea swirls right now.

nbd13 thanks for info I'll have to look up those other two and see what you are talking about with the CL

should give you an idea, i need to get some updated shots of my tank. i am having some covers made out of reef ceramic rock for the intake strainers for me closed loops. so it should look even better in a couple months....

oh i highly recommend sequence Darts for closed loops, if you need pressure rated, then the new UNO line by sequence is NICE! i got a Tarpon to plumb a chiller over 100 feet away (round trip) its alittle louder than the darts, but not by much and it moves alot of water!

as far as hole size it depends on which pump/s you go with. drill for the right sized bulkhead as the intake of the pumps and then the right size for the discharge output of the pump.

also look into an Ocean Motion device, 4-way or 8-way. i am going to be getting a 4-way pretty soon. it really keeps the water movement in a random pattern.

other than that, spa-jet bulkheads are very cool also, i have 4 of them and love them. look here http://www.zeovit.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2474
he has pics of his tank and spa jet bulkheads... they really do move water!

also take you time and go slow, really plan this out if its your dream tank.

weigh out opitions like bracing and how it will effect your lighting, figure out your lighting, flow, and how you want to do you rock work, before you order.

i would think 1-2 closed loops both on ocean motion devices and then go with a couple 2-4 streams in that faux wall overflow thing, and maybe a wavebox would really give you nice random flow. maybe even do a what Bob is talking about also.

is the BB and SPS? or what?

i think the above combo woudl provie really nice flow.

who is building the tank? i highly reccomend James and Envison Acrylics, he has built those faux wall overflow combos before, look at Art's tank. he does excellent work!

Yes it will be a BB and mostly sps with a few lps and softies. I currently have a 225 with 4 400 MH. So I'm upgrading to this larger tank.
Mike at Precisonclarity is building the tank and the oak stand and canopy top. He does great work. And is closer for me to go pick it all up.

Cool, yeah he called me the other day and I was telling him you were looking for the bally. LMK how it works out, like I said I will hook ya up once it grows a bit more. Not much of a grower but one of the only sps I have seen that is truly a bright yellow not green called yellow =)!
