  • Are RD pumps magic???

OK, I have a question. In the eternal quest for the perfect external pump I just don't get the RD. First, are these assumptions correct -

    RD's are pressurized
    RD's are low wattage
    RD's are dead silent
RD's transfer extremely little heat, if any (this one I'm not sure about, or even if they claim it)
RD's do not use a fan (another guess)

How do they achieve this? There are some brilliant people out there at Iwaki, Sequence, GRI that can't do it. So obvioulsy it must be in the materials. Or is it beyond that? What in the heck does Klaus do to achieve all the desired requirements.

Who don't other hobby pump manufacturers build an ultra high end pump with ultra high end materials? Maybe Klaus is magic.

Can Klaus chime in? Or does anyone have a guess? Chuck or any other owners?

I heard all of the above is true except for the pressurized part. At least for the Red Dragons.

First off it's definitely NOT pressurized. As for the rest, I think it's a matter of not seeing the market the way Klaus does. These pumps, I think EVEN if you mass produced would be very pricey--only down from insane to borderline. They probably can figure out how to do it, but it'll price 'em where they don't think there's a market. Let's face some facts. They're probably right. Klaus has sold how many RDs ever? Maybe a few thousand over many years to be absolutely generous. I know for a fact only a little over 500 BKs have EVER been sold. Those other companies sell that many pumps in a few months.

        It's more voodoo than magic

I thought I saw a picture of Klaus with a voodoo doll!

Is there a head loss chart of the RD pumps?

aren't they on the box of the pumps? I'll take a pix later. I think I still have a box laying around. Try the RE site as well.

the curves are there. They are very classically sloped. No flat area as is associated with pressure rated pumps.

The magical thing about RDs is the huge flow at very low wattages and virtually silent and minimal heat-load. Thats magic in my books.

no magic - just quality and efficiency: i´ve just measured a red dragon on our engine test bed: the motor has an unbelievable efficiency (electric input power to mechanical shaft force) of 82 % ! i have never seen a 1 phase sync motor with that ! probably truly some voodoo stuff in there ? :devil2:

correct....we starting buy Red Dragon Pumps 1999.... this month we sold the 5000.th. Red Dragon Pump .

We are not a mass-manufacture... all pumps are handmade and we working with best and newest CNC-machines.. and we testing all pumps where sold in USA , with 120 Volt/60 Hz-electricity-generator..

why are the pumps so good ?

The Red Dragon Pumps for Bubble King skimmers are using a anti-calzium-bypass..

all Red Dragon pumps a serial with Siliciumcarbid-gears, lifelong wear-free.

the pumps are dead-silent so we turning the pumphead, completed from Fullmaterial... the wall are over 20 mm....

the pump ist standing on natural-rubbers...

the shaft in Red Dragon Bubble King are polished Wolframcarbid...

and the screws are in non corrosive titanium.. very expensive...now high quality...

                      Thanks for the pictures Klaus.

                      #1 • Small heat transfer
                      #2 • Very silent
                      #3 • Low energy use
#4 • High flow per watt

All of those are from the close tolerances you have on the RD, yes?
