  • The EcoChiller Arrives

Not that I need the thing currently, but here are some pix.

Side view--these are the fan ports. There are 2 fans on either side of the chiller. They blow down into the bottom and the air is forced up the DLS and out the back where the vent is. Probably does potentially generate A LOT of evaporation and hence cooling.

And yes, the middle of the thing is in fact a spraybar wetdry....remains to see if it really causes issues with nitrates or not.....

Now don't ask me "how is it working" questions, b/c frankly I just checked my tank and the temp is 75.6 with my 1000w heater blazing away....

16.5" tall, not including the bottom drain fitting or the top feed elbow. 18" front to back at the widest point and 29" left to right (but the cords come out the left and right side as well so...)

It's not heavy at all---I mean really it's like the weight of a wetdry with some fans strapped on.

Probably I'll install it in the spring.

special order. They use "regular" 6" computer type fans so there are no electrical conversion issues. Similarly, he doesn't post the IKS on his site, but he's selling those too.

              Chuck...

How does this thing plumb? I imagine you pump water to the unit but is the return to the tank/sump via gravity? Does it come with it's own temp controller?

Weird, I thought I had posted to this already.

Anyways yeah, gravity drain--the thing needs to run downhill.

No temp controller--they assume you're using your own.

It's pricey for what it is, but since noone else had made one and I'm not a DIYer....

I still haven't plumbed it as I'm sure you've noticed it's not very hot at all these days.

Chuck... you might have in another thread but I found this one.

How do they rate these in comparison to traditional chillers. Humidity I know will change the numbers but the cost of running a 1 HP chiller is crazy.

Given the appropriate environment they think this thing can keep up with a 1hp chiller. It probably however evaporates water at a CRAZY rate though.

Looks like an aquarium version of a swamp cooler... Is the unit sealed where the evaporation takes place (if that's how it works, that is...)?

Yeah, essentially it is a swamp cooler. There is an open area for the evap to leave.

Should this stand in the sump or how does it work. The water where does it came out again?
                          Best regards from Sweden

water comes out the bottom. It doesn't per se need to be mounted over the sump at all. You can and probably should remotely plumb it. It does require a pump to feed it and the thing then needs the outlet plumbing to flow "downhill".

Is there any information about using these in an area with high humidity? probably wouldn't be as affective.
