Hi 7thheaven ive been using the scwd for quite sometime now(almost a year now) and it has never failed me i only had one problem with it and it was before switching to zeo that i used to dose kalkwasser to my tank and the internal mechanism got stuck due to calcium deposits and had to replace it but other than that great item ive had no troubles with it.

      Thanks Nestor...

I searched about SCWD in other forums and they said it should be cleaned once in 3~4
      month. Is it true?

To be honest i havent cleaned mine in about 9 months and it hasnt failed i have it connected to the main pump from the sump to the tank after all the mechanical filtration so i doesnt gets any debris or sediment and its working flawlessly.

Thanks I will use CA reactor not Kalk..My worriy is not debris & sediment but
Ca debris..Is it possible to file the Ca sediment within SCWD?

Mine lasted about six months before it stopped switching. Tried vinegar... no go, then tried acid... no go. I gave up on it.

Keep in mind it really reduces flow by really increasing head. If you had extra flow available from the pump I'd say try it, otherwise I say thumbs down.

Well the first unit that i bought it stopped switching after 5 months but it was because of the kalk that i was using and tried everything(like you Steve)but with no luck but after i replaced it for a new one and stopped the use of kalk it hasnt given me any problems so far,and i think is impossible to file anything within the scwd cause of the way it is built.

I am using one, and I gotta be honest - I am not that impressed with it. It has worked great, but the amount of flow out of it is not what I expected. I want to say those things are rated at 1400gph, and I am using a Mag 9.5. I could bump up to a mag 12 but then it would run my sump dry. Guess I should have used bigger overflows...

So I guess what my point is, if you are going to use it, try to get the most out of it or chances are, you won't be happy with it.

I had one and never liked it all that much. Take a look at www.oceansmotions.com IMO they are much more versatile and you don't have to give up any flow.

If at first it doesn't fit get a bigger hammer - Beat to fit paint to match

yeah if I were going to do it all over again, I'd ditch the SCWD and get an OM...

Man why didnt i saw those OM before it looks a lot better than scwd and you dont have to sacrifice any flow.Guess im stuck with scwd until it breaks down lol.

I agree with Steve, Colin, Matt.

Actually, dis-assembling a "heart" of a system's circulation, a la an Oceans Motions or a SCWD (I have the latter, heard good things about the former), is too much a PITA for me to want to implement on Jake's Reeftank 2.0

I don't like the idea of buying a piece of expensive gear that needs maintenance or it gets "stuck" in one position. Skimmers, reactors need maintenance enough, and those are done easily.

Disassembling a return to clean a SCWD or OM device? It ain't that kinda party at my house.

I got a Tunze wavebox for flow, but am still uncertain about my return. I'll probably go with a manifold personally. Even the OM is supposed to be maintained and I don't like the sound of that myself. Just my take.

                            Dear Colin...

If I use the product of oceansmotions in my 80 cube tank(100gal) which model

can you recommand? and Can I use this in my return RD pump? not CL...

My return pump is RD6.5m and I think it is more 1500gph

First off I would really recommend talking to the owner personally to get his recommendation as I’m not sure how much flow each unit will take. (He is a very nice guy to deal with)

That being said I think I would use the OM 4 way model with the 2” x 1.5” inlet/outlet and the drum version 2 or 3. I think this would give you the most diverse flow without having too much flow in one spot.

If you decide to get one make sure that a snail can’t get into the drum. I had this happen to me (dumb snail wondered down one of the outlet pipes) with the result of burning up the motor and destroying the drum.

IMO these are great for taking the static flow from a closed loop or return and making it more random.
And yes you can hook it up to just about any pump as long as it doesn’t overpower the unit. HTH
