  • Quartine Tank, whats need?

Hey guys i am thinking i should setup a quartine tank. it could doubble as a frag tank also.

i am thinking along the lines of 50 or 60 long by 16 or 18 wide by like 12 high.

using a small sump with maybe a euro-reef on it and a mag drive 9 or 12 for the return. and maybe some seios in there for movement.

early on it will just be used for quartine then i will use it for a frag tank.....

so i will not use any LR in there maybe some PVC pieces for the fish to hide in.

what do you think about using t5s though? the tank will only be 12" high so would that work?

anyway let me know what you guys think.

should i run zeo on it? i mean while doing the quartining of fish and then for the frag tank i will defenitly use zeo.

    thanks again.

Your plan sounds ok until you turn it into a frag tank. Then IMO you'll no longer have a QT when you need it again.

I've always thought a 20g tank with a hang on power filter to be enough for most QT setups for new additions as they come along. I always kept a piece of cousre sponge in the main sump or Marineland Bio-Wheels floating around to give the QT a head start. As far as maintaining water quality in QT's I just depend on water changes and not high tech equipment.

well hopefully by the time i turn it into a frag tank, my main tank will be fully stocked with fish. so therefore i would no longer need the quartine tank.

should i provide some type of light for the fish while in quartine? or is this not necessary. i am talking like VHOs or t5s....

      thanks.

I'd use some light just so they don't become to shy. Just about anything would be fine.

No need for Zeo when its a Q tank since you wont even have LR etc etc. Also, no need for T5s when its a Q tank. Any cheapo FL will do.

            thanks,

            so what about nutrients though,
will a skimmer be enough? since i will not use LR.

            i assume FL mean fluroscent?

            thanks!

Yup, a good skimmer will be enuff for a QT and water changes with water closely matching the main tank's parameters

I like to keep a few pieces of live rock in the displays sump to use for bacteria when first setting up a QT. As well as supplying bacteria the rock will give the new comers a place to hideout and get accustomed to their new environment (less stress).

i will just use the water from the main tanks water change....

on the LR subject, for quartening fish its not recomend, because of the fact that if you treat with copper the LR will become effected.

i will use PVC pieces for the fish to hideout in.

                  thanks guys,
