  • reef ceramic "curing"

I've heard that the RC tends to be quite murky/cloudy if added straight to a tank. How long would y'all recommend bathing it in RODI to get rid of the fine particulate? If y'all haven't seen it....the shapes ARE super cool. :fart:

Chuck, you are pretty much treading new ground. Only a few people have actually added this to water, Nick being one of them. Anyway, here's what i'd do.

Throw it in your bathtub/shower and turn on the shower and let it clean for a long time. You can use the garden hose too but then you have to stand there holding it. After that, put it in your "curing" bins. If it gets cloudy, change the water the next day. You might have to do a few water changes a week.

When I put the piece in our tank at IMAC I left it in the hotel shower for at least 45min. Then put it in the tank. Next day it was pretty cloudy. Do what you are able to do with time to rinse and change water.

Hey Chuck, this is what i did.

        1. do the shower trick like Madison says, it works really well, but when you are done make sure to clean the shower or you will get yelled at, haha.

        2. I put the pieces in a rubbermaid tub with RODI water and swished them around and let them sit over night.

        3. the water was not cloudy in the morning so what i did whas swish one more time and nothing came off so i pulled it out.

        4. then i added it to the tank and did the transer.

the only thing you may want to do is let the pieces sit in the RODI water longer. maybe 3 days? i think that would help and change the water a couple times, maybe 2.

i think this would help pull some of the silicates off and lessen the chance of a diatom bloom. because trust me they suck! haha.

anyway thats what i did worked pretty well.

Probably will soak the RC at least 2 weeks. Multiple water changes.

Chuck, you should rinse/soak it at least 3 times in few days period.

I've had 3 pillars in my new tank for about 6 weeks now along with about 300lbs of live rock. The live rock looks great, but the Reef Ceramics still have quite a coating of green hair algae. It's starting to recede in places that touch live rock, so hopefully I only have a few more weeks until it's gone completely.

I prepared the RC by rinsing it with tap water and then soaking it in RO/DI for a day and lastly putting it in with my cooking live rock for a few days. I really wish I had put it in with the live rock for a longer period - I think it would have helped with this green hair algae.

i agree with Art 100% should have put it with LR and i could have skipped this diatom now hair algae bloom.

also Chuck what did you get exactly?

                  pillars and back wall plates.

I got 2 weird pillars--not stock, and I'm getting delivered plates for the back of the tank.

I'm going with 200lbs of large branch pieces for the bulk of the decor, but you just can't get pillars otherwise ya know? And how else to decorate the back walls????

I got tubs of LR in the backyard...so y'all think it'll cure better if I throw it in with those????

I think it is a great idea Chuck to do it that way.

When I get mine its going in tubs for at least two months with rubble rock and I think this will really help in terms of avoiding the algea problems.

Yes I would suggest this. The only issue is that the RC is pretty fragile IMO. One reason I didn't put it in with the live rock was that I was afraid of busting up the RC in the process. I was still busy "cooking" the rock, so I moved it around a bit.

Otherwise, I think the longer it's with the rock in saltwater the better.

Yes do it that way Chuck,

like Art says try not to be too rouch with the ceramic rocks.

although if something does happen just line it back up (sure you have enough practice doing this, haha) and use alot of super glue.

one of mine broke in transit so Gary recomend super glue and it work PERFECT!

Oh yeah, I'm figuring to be epoxying or supergluing some stuff back together. I've, uhm, ahem, already noticed that it's a bit fragile....
