  • Deltec Eco Cooler

Hmmmm.. another money saver. Anyone try this chiller? Even has fans to cool it down.

Deltec have shown the way to reducing water temperature economically in the modern salt and fresh water aquarium. The need of water movement and light to keep salt water invertebrates and fish requires pumps and lights creating heat in the water column which is not healthy for a stable aquarium environment and leads to coral bleaching and stressed fish.

    Economical and Environmentally Friendly
The ECO cooler is environmentally friendly and economical and can be used for both salt and fresh water aquariums. The principle of the ECO cooler borrows its technology from a water cooling tower. It is possible to use the ECO cooler in conjunction with refrigerant coolers, therefore, reducing the size of the electricity bill substantially and being secure in the knowledge that even on the very hottest days of the year the temperature in your aquarium will remain stable.

    Flows
It is important to have the correct water flow through the coolers and we have given you the best guidance notes that we can, however, for a cooler to work at its most efficient there should be between 1.0 to 1.5 degree temperature drop, as stated and it may be necessary to slow the water flow to the cooler to achieve this .

    3 sizes are available

    61050 - 700W cooling power - For tanks up to 600 litres.

    61051 - 1000W cooling power - For tanks up to 1000 litres.

    61052 - 1800W cooling power - For tanks up to 2000 litres.

Daniel Knop the well known aquarist and author runs an 8000lt system in the basement at his home in Germany.

Daniel fitted one of our biggest Eco coolers to his system which on our calculations is only specified for aquariums up to 2000 Ltrs.

I believe this works by evaporation so it requires very low humidity for it to work efficiently. If the humidty is relatively high, then there will no cooling power. FYI

nestor, i found this person using it:

        http://www.ultimatereef.net/TOTM/Dec03.htm

I use Schego titanium heaters and a Deltec Eco cooler both on X10 interfaces controlled by the Octopus. The evaporative Eco cooler performed very well in this summer?s heat but I do have it sited outside as it does kick out a surprising amount of hot wet air.

Nestor, it was definitely a great find. It should be available in the U.S. soon, but needs to be requested first. Not sure who you order Deltec from in the Caribbean. I have a feeling they are going to be pretty expensive if they need to be special ordered. But if you do get one, I would use this chiller as the primary and have the refrigerant chiller as the secondary as backup.

There was a posting about these elsewhere and they emphasized that they really need to be super well vented b/c they as stated work on evaporation. So they are super energy effecient, but they evaporate A LOT of water and so you need to be able to handle that hot wet air and the topoff issues.

                Chuck,

From this description, it looks like chillers work off evaporation already? It looks like there is more to it to this chiller than meets the eye. Im really interested in it thats for sure!

                -------
                Definition: What is a chiller?

When people first encounter the term "chiller" (if they don't first think of a scary movie) they invariably think of something that cools the surrounding air like an air conditioner or maybe even a refrigerator. In either case, there will be six main components involved:

Evaporator - cools the water, water/glycol or air by transferring the heat to the refrigerant which is turned into a gas.
Compressor - takes this gas and increases its pressure so that ambient air or water can remove the heat.
Condenser - rejects heat gained by the gas using ambient air or cooling tower water to condense the gas back to a liquid for use again by the evaporator.
Holding Tank - holds the circulating coolant, usually water (can be water/glycol), tank is sized large enough to prevent turbulent flow in tank causing pump cavitation.
Pump - circulates coolant from the holding tank to the evaporator and from the evaporator to the machine or process being cooled and back to the tank.
Control Panel - houses temperature controller, compressor contactor, pump starter, 3-phase fuses, control transformer, safety controls, run and fail lights.

Found someone else on bluereef's forum who looks to have the same chiller. I like the way he designed it out. More pics and info about his setup here:

I love that vent idea! Those fans kick butt at teh bottom left!

Well...I suppose you know I couldn't resist. Being that I live in a low humidity environment....I've got the largest ecochiller on order....

No Nick, I ain't gonna ship a friggin' chiller to MI. The first dude/chick who coughs up enough $$ and picks it up will be the new owner. Course for all I know the Ecochiller will suck so....I'm not in that much of a hurry to ditch the JBJ.
