  • Need Chiller

    Hey guys,

well i currently do not have a chiller for my 180, but i have 6 fans running to keep it cool.

with my new 275, i figure i should really get one,

    which ones are good?

for my new tank i plan on using the same lights, 4 RO IIIs and i will add some VHOs, probably 4 36.5"

so right now i have the house AC set at 72 but the tank is down stairs, so that helps, anyway its about 65 degrees down stairs, so that helps, but liek today my mom decided to put the house ac up to 75 and the tank is now at 81.

so i figure i mind as well get a chiller just incase.

now granted i will have about 400 gallons, so it will take longer to heat up, wont it?

i will be using a Medusa Dual Controller, SO i do NOT need a controller on the chiller its self.

anyway which ones are good? pacific? artica?

let me know guys i dont want a HUGE one, but maybe like 1/3 hp or 1/4 hp? or maybe 1/2 hp?

    anyway let me know guys!

    thanks!

    Nick

I have an Aqua Medic 1/2Hp and it works great. Built in controller and heater. Good price and never had any problems. You can get a 1HP for a good price too. My friend has one and its works great!

another thing is, i would hate to have to plumb this thing outside.

i was thinking of running a length of PVC along the wall and then around a coner to another room.

        would this work?

my basement does NOT have any walls its all open, but it would be about 20-30 feet away.

anyway so i guess i need a quite one also.

i just dont think my mom or dad would like me going through a windown in my basement.

it looks like a 1/2 hp will do though....

          1/3 arctica will work.

Of note the 1/2 arctica uses a different compressor from the standard arcticas and is AMAZINGLY energy effecient for a chiller.

Im using the 1hp Artica on my 250G tank. It probably due to the higher temps and humidity we are facing here in South East Asia. Here, the 1/3hp Artica will not even be powerful enuff to pull down the temp in the day.

Of note the 1/2 hp commercial arctica only draws 5 amps. LOWER than the 1/3 arctica. Has something to do with a different compressor and larger fan--ie not as quiet as the "standard" arcticas.

Farish, I'm not suprised that you have problems with your climate. I should add as a caveat that I used one with no problems in a fairly temparte climate. Our highs in my neck of the woods are only transiently the low90s

Nick, I just installed an 1/2 hp Pacific Coast on my 225. I have 4, 250 watt and 1 400 watt MH's with 6 fans also. I closed the cabinet and turned off the sump fan. We will see how she does. I did turn it down far enough to kick on and it is extremely quiet. I will let ya know. Prices jumped 100 bucks in the last few days. PA hadn't changed their prices yet so I jumped on one.

Yeah if you could let me know how it does that would be GREAT!

also where is your chiller located in relation to the tank?

                    thanks!

also what pump are you using to feed it? and how many gph does it need, if you know...

                      thanks!

The chiller is located directly behind the tank, in the garage. I merely put the chiller inline on the return. The return pump is a Mak 4. 1190 gph at 0 head. It is set up for 3/4" fittings. I put 1" on the intake side and 1" to and from the chiller, 2 90's and a couple sweeps with the spaflex. So I shouldn't have hurt head calcs terribly. I'm guessing about 900 gph.

They too have bumped up the price. Saved myself over 100 bucks, (although I splurged and had it shipped 3 day select)

So far it is set at 79 degrees and hasn't even kicked on yet. Tank temp is 80 per the chiller.

Nick, 3 days into the chiller. Holds my tank at a rock solid 80 degrees. Right now with moderate temps outside (low mid 80's) the chiller only runs about 30 or 40 minutes total. Honestly don't know if it runs more than that, its too quiet to hear unless I stick my hand in front of the condenser. I do have 2 large fans pulling from the canopy into the garage that are pretty loud. But the chiller isn't any louder than most return pumps.

Let me know if you need any more info.
