I have one (HANA) is the brand name. I think it's worth it b/c you can tell when you need to replace the filters.

          Greetings All !

          What is TDS meter?
A "Total Dissolved Solids" (TDS) meter has many applications in the realms of water & wastewater treatment, boiler blow down, electroplating rinse tanks, drinking water, hydroponics, Printing Industry, aquaculture, and aquariums.

Within the aquarium realm, TDS meters are often used to assess the status of reverse osmosis (RO) water filters and water purification systems. The meters tell you when a changeout of your water filtration/purification system components is necessary, i.e., they are an effective way to compare rejection rates and gauge reverse osmosis membrane, water filter and water purification performance.

          Is it necessary?
Only if you want to know if your RO unit is functioning ... hehe ... I'm with Nick: "Well worth every penny ...". And the handheld units are relatively not that expense (~$40).

How often do you calibrate TDS meter?
Depends on the model. Some are relatively "self-calibrating", requiring only minimum maintenance. Others utilize salt (NaCl) solutions, among other things. Probe replacement is typically the most expense aspect of maintenance.

          Which brand do you have?(recommandation)
I too like the Hanna stuff. Check out Hanna's hydroponics meters of you're interested in multi-factor testers (... combination testers for pH, Temperature, EC (conductivity), etc. ...). Do a google search using "tds meters" as the keyword and you'll get hundreds of choices.

          HTH.
