  • bulb burned out.

My hallide did not fire this morning. The bulb is only 4 mo. old. I took it out to examine it and it looked like there was burned up paper or something that looks similar on the inside. Is this how a burned out bulb looks? At any rate how long can my sps and clam last without the hallide? Also it is my only light source.

Well a few days anyways. 4 mos is EXTREMELY short for lifespan.

Do you have the bulbs on timers? I have found that occasionally the intermatic timers I have don't completely trip the on switch. Something to look at anyway.

They are on timers but I also tried just plugging the ballast in and they still did not fire.

They? multiple bulbs? or bulb ballast combination. Have you tried switching ballasts to the questionable bulb? Just trying to eliminate all possiblities before you buy a bulb. Not unheard of for a bulb to go in 4 months. What type of ballast? mag or electric.

bulb ballest combo, sorry my wording was weird. Well it was the bulb, my freind gave me an xm 15k that he hand only used for a month. He wouldn't take any cash so I think I owe him a dinner. Looks like my corals are unhappy from going without light though. Hopfully they don't take too long to color back up.

Just be careful and raise that fixture and lower it slowly over the next several days. What bulb is the XM replacing? Same temp? If it is replacing a 10k or a hamilton, your should be ok. Glad you got it back up and running.

It is replacing a hamilton 14k. I am going to email them and see if they will replace it. The last hamilton I had lasted a lot longer than four months.
