  • New Iwasaki 150watt Medium BAsed Spot

Ok guys I received the bulb today before work as well as the ballast. I went to screw it into one of the Par30 cans I have and guess what!! The bulb is to wide I am going to Guitar Center on Friday (they sell DJ Par Can) to find a can I can fit it into

What I can tell you so far is this. This is a DE bulb for sure. It looks to be solid as does the new Ice Cap MH ballast. When I find a can (likely a PAR46) that this will fit I am going to wire a ceramic medium based socket with PFO Quick Disconnects between the can and the ballast. Plan on getting ballast boxes for these as well. It looks like I will be using two of these bulbs and 3 of the Blue LEDS on the lighting rack. I am pretty excited to do this and think it will be a lot of fun too.

      Bob,

when I get home tonight I will shoot some pics of teh PAR 38 cans I have and the Iwasaki 20K. I hope to get a clear shot of the filament for you guys as well.

This is an important part of what I want to do with the tank. The 20K spots will be at the end of the cycle (1 hour overlap with the 250's befire they turn off) and will be used because from what I am reading here and in other references the rate of photosysnthesis seems greatest in the early photoperiod.

The LEDS are a 24/7 commitment to stimulate behavior and maybe some added coloration on the reef at night. This way the reef is never a truly dark place it just changes when the sun goes down and can still be enjoyed.

        http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewIt...product=IC3121

        with this bulb?

        http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewIt...product=MB2831

is that all i would need to run this setup?

sorry i am not that good with electrical stuff need someone to explain it to me and probably a couple times so i can get it haha

do i need this for example?

        http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewIt...product=IC7631

is this a box that the ballast goes in? and is it recommend for this setup?

i really can wait to see the pics Mike!

        thanks

Hey also Mike, do you know how long these bulbs will last?

i mean they are what about 100 bucks for the 20k bulb, will it alteast last a year? i would hope so.

          thanks

Nick that is all teh stuff. I personally do not want to use that pendant because it defeats my reason for using these in hte first place.

The pendant will focus light straight down over the reef much like a bell pendant would. I want to be able to direct the light in from an angle in front and on the side of the tank to light the corals differently at teh end of teh day. Some corals that would not receive lighting near the bases could receive lighting this way but of a lower intensity. The angle will bring about different changes I am thinking than we are used to looking at.

With a tank full of table top acropora this will be especially useful. The LEDS will also provide some lighting but are more for accent purposes and flourescense at night and throughout the day.

They are HQI from what I can tell Nick and on an Ice Cap ballast I think I can get a year out of it

So you dont think you could angle that ice cap pendant? like you would with the can you will get?

so you are just going to get a can, like we talked about sunday that you can adjust the angle to and mount it. Then you can adjust your angle to hit where you want in the tank? does that make sense?

so you are still going to use the 150w ice cap electronic ballast right?

so i would assume 1 ballast will run 1 light right?

how are you going to hook the can up to the ballast? is it simple to do?

See Mike i need to angle it also like you. So i want to know what is best to use in this case.

i need to light an area under a brace that i have, hence the reason for the need to angle the pendant.

let me know what you think Mike.

BTW how much are those PAR46 cans? just an estimate is fine.

                thanks again Mike

                  Nick,

If I can find a can (regardless of par because that is nothing more then the bulb size that will fit ir and shape of teh bulb) that this fits into easily I will buy it.

It's very simple to wire this. Just like wiring a mogul socket Nick. Its three wires (hot/neutral/ground) and that is it. there is no rocket science to it and after I finish mine you can swing over and replicate it exactly that way we know it will work. I am taking teh bulb with me to Guitar Center to see what Can works the nI am buying two of them

                    Sounds good Mike,

so are you going to buy a ballast cover also? i read it may increase the "life" of the ballast?

so i guess if you can find a can that will fit the bulb that would be great!

if not i guess i could buy the pendant and angle it in the canopy so i can get the light to shine where i want.

in theory that could work i guess, right? haha

Do you think the pendant will reflect the light better than the can will?

                    Now what is this,

"ceramic medium based socket" i assume you need to for the bulb to screw into?

dang maybe its just easier for me to buy the pendant, i am sure they are more expensive, but i would like i could angle it by using cables at different lengths to get the exact angle i want....

it might also reflect more than a can will, but again not sure because i am not sure of the properties of the can....

                    thanks Mike.

This is a picture of the bulb from the beck. It is a DE bulb in a spot light enclosure.

I think Friday finding a can will not bo too difficult. I just need to locate one that has a round internal enclosure rather than the square shape I have near the rear of the cans I am using for the LEDS.

                        Dear Mike....
Do you have 20K or 6500K? Could you express the color of your bulb?

I bought the 20K bulb. The lens seems to have some hint of blue to it as well. I finally found a spot fixture it would fit into made bt Chauvet. Not terrible in terms of expense (51.00 for two cans delivered) and it will handle a 300 watt bulb. Socket is ceramic and grounded already. All I need to do is wire in a PFO quick disconnect and I am golden.

                              So you approve then

I ordered them for a place called gear tree. They are Chauvet Par 38 Chrome (color) cans. It really is the perect can thus far for this application. I have a total of 5 LED spots (got two free) so I need to build a stage lighting truss now instead LOL
