  • How high do you have your 400w se bulbs?

I was thinking of a switch to 400w bulbs. How high would I need to have them over the tank? I would be using luminarcs. I want to know if I have enough room in my hood.

My 400w bulbs are about 12" from the water.

I run 400 watt Radiums in the Lumenarcs also and the bulbs are about 12" from the surface.

Ok so I have enough room for the luminarcs. I am tring to decide if I should take the plunge. If I did change it would be to 2-400w 20k blvs which I dont know that much about. I currently have 3-250w de 14k and 20k blvs.

Prodman, how wide is your tank? The LA III's are great for >24". If your at <24" look into the minis I hear that they are easier to mount and work just as well. My LA III's easily cover the 30" tank width plus, they're frickin huge. If you need any measurements other than what is available at the PGS site, let me know.

Marshal- My tank is 4x2x2. I dont know what I am going to do. My tank is doing well as is. But I prefer the 20k look. So I was thinking it might be better to have 400w 20k instead of 250w 20k. Would 2 minis with 400s light my tank? I was looking into 2 full size.

If you like the blue look, the 400 watt radiums with the HQI ballasts are the way to go, especially on a 24" deep tank. A few things to consider though, How are you going to deal with the heat? the 400's seem to put out considerably more heat than the 250's especially the DEs with the UV shield. I don't know the look of the 250 radiums but suspect they would be too blue. I have never seen the mini's in person, but someone on the board has them and may be able to comment further. It is tough to get an even spread with 250 DEs. I tried on my 75 which isn't 2 feet wide and had a hard time. Have you tried any other 14 or 15 k bulbs with your current set-up? I really liked the look of the phoenix 14k DE on the 250 watt SLS mag 80 ballast. Growth pretty much sucked but the color was nice. The color is about the same as the 400 watt radiums but not nearly as intense. What ballasts are you currently running?

Paul, there is an interesting thread going on RC about the mini's. I will post a link, Mod's remove it if inappropriate.

Marshal-I forgot to subscribe to this thread thats why its taking me so long to reply. I have tried the pheonix 14k liked them but want something more intense. I like the blv 20k wich I have now but know the par cant be great. I use all m80 ballasts. I will check out the thread you linked. I have a pair of full size L3 waiting for me so I will most likely use those if I switch. How often do you swap out your radiums? And do you keep pinks and yellows well? Thanks for the help.

Paul, I have ran the radiums since november of last year. This is the first set I have used and plan on running them for 6 or 7 months. Unless something better comes along, I will use Radiums again. You can go to Sanjay's lighting website and compare different bulbs spectral plots on the various ballasts. The way I like to compare is to go with a bulb I know. I used the 250 phoenix for quite awhile so I know how it looks. I then for the 2nd bulb look at one I want to try and compare the graphs. They are pretty easy to read and will give you a good idea of what the bulb will look like with your ballast. So far the pink birdsnest is doing well, very pink with slightly blue growing tips. I don't have any yellow corals yet so I can't comment on that aspect.

Just curious but whats the foot print of your 225?I think I am almost ready to take the plunge. But 6-7 months is kind of short. But I guess you think its worth it. I will go look at sanjays charts some more. I did not find them that easy before but will try again
