  • I've got a lighting problem

Hi, over my 75g. sps tank, I have (2) 250w MH XM 10k bulbs, and (2) 110w. VHO atentics...

Now the past 3 days I noticed that the MH bulb on the right hand side of the aquarium was significantly dimmer and looked like a more 14k type bulb. Also, when I held my hands out under the bulb on the right hand side, and the left hand side, the bulb on the left was significantly brighter (as I could tell through looking at how bright the bulb looked on my hand). Now these bulbs were new when I purchased them, and I have brand new ballast that I installed when I put the 250w. bulbs in. There is a little peice of broken glass inside the bulb just laying on the bottom of the inside of the bulb when the bulb is on, but it has always been there and my bulb worked fine when this little piece of glass was in there before the problem. I looked inside the bulb and i see no places where this peice of glass could have broken off, i think it was there when the bulb was made...I dont think it is causing the problem. Can a bulb just go bad and lose its intensity? I have only had the bulb for 5 months or so....i just dont get why it would suddenly lose 1/4 or more of its intensity. I have a 250w SE murcury vapour bulb that I could put in the right hand side that has only been used for 5 days or so when I didnt get the XM bulbs through the mail yet...could I put that in and see if it is dimmer too just to see if I have a bad connection or something?

I don't get what is causing the problem...the bulb just suddenly lost intensity and lookes more 14kish....

    Thanks, Adam

How old are the bulbs? What type of ballasts? DE or SE? If SE, look for a crack in the glass envelope. This happened to me once due to water spray. IIRC had the same symptoms.

Have you checked for loose wires in the socket? ground wire tight at both ends? Try swapping bulbs, that will narrow it down to bulb or ballast and socket.

Hey Adam... if that doesn't work try swithing the bulbs to see if the problem follows the bulb.
