  • Starfire glass in DE enclosures ?

So I was thinking that since starfire (low Fe) glass is clearer that perhaps there would be some value in replacing the glass on my DE pendant with starfire..

Anyone know if this would provide the required UV protection ?

    thanks,
    rich.

I believe (Dave) O2many fishes had some made up and tested them using a light meter. IIRC he found that the low iron glass blocked UV light just well as regular tempered glass and let about 10% more light thru. I had my local glass shop make me a couple that were 3/16 inch thick and tempered. I put 1 in over my 40g and haven’t had any problems. (Be forewarned the bulb in this fixture is a old 20k so not much be hind it) YMMV, HTH

    120 BB w/20g BB side tank, 29g sump, (2) 250w RO III, 14k AC, Bluewave VII ballast, Deltec 851, Panworld 150 return, (2) 6000 Streams w/controller, AC II Controller w/(2) DC4, GEO 618 CR.

If at first it doesn't fit get a bigger hammer - Beat to fit paint to match

thanks Colin, I think I'll pick up a piece for my pendant and give it a try.

Dave made some for me. I have no idea if it increases the light transmission, but it's certainly "safe".

          Colin,

          How much did that cost?

IIRC about 65 for the two pieces of glass.

I went to a local glass shop on the weekend and it cost $65 for starfire to go in 1 x 150w and 2 x 70w DE enclosures.
